Thanks for this article, which has lots of really good information!
I have two thoughts to add. The problem with synfuels and biofuels seems to be that they are about double the price of conventional kerosine. But what if kerosine had its CO2 externalities priced in, e.g. through taxes? Then the climate-friendly fuels would be competitive. But doubling fuel costs wouldn’t double ticket prices. And actually, flying is currently often so cheap that it would still be economical at double the price. The last few flights I took cost less than $40.00 — Frankfurt-Corfu, or Valencia-Paris, all over 2 hours. Immensely cheaper than any other way of travel, even after becoming CO2 neutral. So vote for policies that price in CO2 externalities!
My second point is related. Fly discount! Ryanair for example uses new, fuel-efficient planes, and flies at industry-leading capacity. Your CO2 emissions double when your plane is only half full. Carpool when you drive if you must drive, and if you must fly, shun the legacy airlines.
